Cross Country Staffing: The healthcare staffing agency Tampa General turned to
April 16, 2014 by Vickie Anenberg
When Tampa General Hospital needed a healthcare staffing agency to meet its needs during an especially busy period, Cross Country Staffing (CCS) was able to deliver. This was no small task given the scope of the assignment.
Tampa General has more than 1,000 beds at its downtown Tampa, FL location and over 6,700 employees. The Level I Trauma Center also has a five-helicopter fleet and works with the University of South Florida to serve 23 counties. It has been accredited with “Magnet” status by the American Nurses Credentialing Center since 2005.
The hospital looked to a healthcare staffing agency to deliver a comprehensive outsourced solution as it implemented its Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system. While the Tampa General staff underwent “Big Bang” EMR training, CCS was asked to fill an order request for all specialties. This included two of the most challenging requests to fill: Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Level I Trauma Center nurses.
To complicate matters, Florida is not a compact state. All of the backfill staff supplied by the healthcare staffing agency had to acquire a state license, and this had to be accomplished quickly, without the participation of the hospital. Tampa General’s Human Resources Department would not be available to interview, screen and onboard the needed staff.
Cross Country Staffing filled the last-minute order request and assumed all responsibilities associated with it, which included:
- Human resource screening
- Credential management
- Orientation and onboarding
Over a three-month period, CCS was able to achieve a 100-percent fill rate for the request. The healthcare staffing agency provided a total 58 licensed and experienced healthcare professionals.
As a result, Tampa General Hospital had a successful EMR implementation and was able to maintain a consistency in patient care by using Cross Country Staffing’s Managed Services.
