DAISY recognition program rewards nurses for their vital role in the healthcare communityOctober 20, 2014 by Vickie Anenberg

Every nurse possesses the fundamental passion for helping others,  but even the most dedicated, altruistic worker will value professional recognition. Acknowledgement and appreciation bring more satisfaction to the work that a nurse performs every day, which can can lead to better nurse retention and superior patient care.

To ensure our nurses know they are appreciated, Cross Country Staffing participates in the DAISY Program, which was established in 1999 by the family of the late Patrick Barnes. During his illness, Barnes’ nursing team provided such outstanding care and compassion that his family wanted to do something to show their appreciation. Thus, they created the DAISY Awards program.

Today, more than 1,700 healthcare facilities in all 50 states and a dozen countries participate in the national awards program, which recognizes nurses for excellence, compassion, clinical skill, leadership and outstanding patient care. Award nominations come from peers, physicians, staff, administrators, patients and their families. Each participating healthcare facility can determine how frequently it wishes to present the award – typically on a monthly basis – and establish award criteria that meets the organization’s mission, culture and values.

DAISY Award recipients are spotlighted with a page on the DAISY organization’s website, featuring their photo and details on why the nurse received the award. Recipients also get a certificate of recognition, DAISY Award pin that they can wear on their I.D. badges, and a stone sculpture – titled “A Healer’s Touch” – hand-carved in Zimbabwe.

Participating healthcare facilities can experience multiple benefits from program participation, including greater job satisfaction among staff, improved retention, enhanced reputation as a caring employer, and greater peer role modeling.

Ensuring your nurses know they are valued, and taking that extra step to recognize their exceptional qualities, yields positive results for your entire facility and the patients you serve.
