The background check is a standard part of a hospital’s hiring process. It would be negligent to hire staff without making sure they can be trusted to provide adequate care for patients. However, not all background checks are created equal, though, and this is where a company that provides interview services can help.
The List of Excluded Individuals and Entities (LEIE) that is maintained by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) describes instances when a thorough background check may prevent serious problems down the road. This list contains the names of all the people who are excluded from participation in federal healthcare programs due to convictions for different types of criminal offenses.
These include Medicare or Medicaid fraud, as well as other healthcare-related fraud. It documents examples of patient abuse, financial misconduct and distribution of controlled substances, too, among others. While many of these offenses would likely appear on a standard background check, HHS also has the discretion to make exclusions for other less serious offenses such as misdemeanors or professional misconduct.
A healthcare organization that hires anyone on this list would be subject to civil monetary penalties. These penalties can include no payment for any items or services furnished, such as Medicare, Medicaid and all other Federal plans and programs that provide health benefits funded directly or indirectly by the United States.
With all of the serious ramifications that can result from a less-than-thorough background check, enlisting the help of a seasoned Interview Services team that understands everything that must be done to properly screen prospective hires.
