IT Spend Dominates Hospital Budgets

IT Spend Dominates Hospital BudgetsDecember 1, 2015 by Vickie Anenberg

In a new survey, Premier, Inc., the nationwide healthcare alliance, polled C-level hospital executives to determine how much importance they placed on healthcare IT (HIT) during 2015. The results indicated that over 72 percent increased their budgets for capital investments in HIT to meet the challenges of value-based care and reimbursement. Almost 40 percent of these respondents stated that they had increased their IT budget by more than 10 percent year-over-year.

Cross Country Staffing recommends reading a new article posted by Healthcare IT News that includes metrics from the Premier survey, and quotes from the company’s COO, Michael Alkire, from a press release concerning the importance of continued healthcare IT expenditures.

In the release, Alkire stated that, “Investments in HIT, data analytics and modern clinical infrastructure are foundational for providers to seamlessly deliver population health services across their inpatient, outpatient and alternative care sites… The enactment of the Affordable Care Act brought reimbursement cuts and increased pressure on health systems to tightly manage budgets… The shift requires that health systems make new investments in infrastructure and high-value care networks to deliver better outcomes, as well as manage risk-based contracts and less reimbursement.”

The Premier survey indicates that in 2015, hospitals significantly increased their investments in healthcare IT tools (systems) to manage chronic care, patient outreach, patient wellness, analytics, and patient engagement. Combined hospital investments in HIT for 2015 has had a huge impact in dwindling resources, which has made the need for a proven, cost-effective program to acquire scarce, qualified healthcare IT professional contingency staff all the more important.
