According to an Associated Press release following the landmark Supreme Court decision concerning the legality of health insurance subsidies contained in the Affordable Care Act (ACA), “Investors in hospital stocks rejoiced” by driving up the value of such stocks the following day. Numerous senior hospital leaders and consultants immediately issued statements supporting the decision. Additionally, the Advisory Board has provided an online capsule analysis of the decision as it pertains to hospitals. In it, executive editor Dan Diamond wrote, “The decision is a boon for hospitals, which faced the threat of losing billions of dollars in patient revenue.”

Furthermore, according to Chas Roades, the chief research officer, “Providers in the 34 states using the federally facilitated exchanges will avoid the negative financial impacts that would have been expected with a predicted loss of coverage among 8 million to 9 million enrollees in the individual market.

“The ruling is a clear win for the coverage expansion goals of the ACA, and providers can expect the government to continue full speed ahead with the delivery system reform provisions of the law as well. Overall, this ruling will have minimal impact on providers, who should maintain current course and speed with all strategies related to the implementation of the ACA.”

Clearly, the Affordable Care Act is leading consumers to seek healthcare in greater numbers than ever before. Hospitals are reporting much higher ED activity, and hospital leaders will need to revisit their staffing plans to cope with an overall increase in patient populations.
